Condition Guide

Every vintage piece carries the subtle imprint of time. Gentle variation in tone, finish and surface texture is part of the beauty of original furniture and reflects decades of use, care and changing environments.

We assess each piece individually to ensure structural integrity and usability, while celebrating the patina and character that make vintage design so distinctive. Our condition descriptions are intended to provide clarity and confidence while preserving the authenticity of each object. Where appropriate, we also note specific restored elements that allow each piece to be lived with safely and enjoyed in contemporary interiors, without compromising its original character.

EXCELLENT VINTAGE CONDITION

Pieces in excellent vintage condition have been exceptionally well preserved and show only the lightest evidence of age. Surfaces may display subtle patina, minor tonal variation or very small character marks consistent with careful historical use.
Structurally sound and presentation-ready, these pieces retain a refined presence while still expressing their vintage authenticity.

VERY GOOD VINTAGE CONDITION

These pieces show a beautifully developed patina that reflects decades of considered use and enjoyment. Light surface wear, gentle finish mellowing or small historic marks may be visible, contributing to warmth and individuality.

The piece remains structurally solid and fully functional, offering a balanced blend of refinement and vintage character.

GOOD VINTAGE CONDITION

Furniture in good vintage condition carries more visible signs of its history, resulting in a richer and more expressive patina. Areas of surface wear, finish variation or historic marks may be present and form part of the piece's narrative and design integrity.

All items remain structurally stable and suitable for everyday use.

RESTORED ELEMENTS

Some pieces are presented in their original vintage condition with specific elements that have been thoughtfully restored or updated. This is most common with vintage lighting and is always carried out with care to preserve the integrity and character of the original piece.

Rewiring of vintage lighting: All vintage lamps and lighting in our collection have had their electrical components updated where necessary to ensure safe use in modern interiors. Wherever possible, sympathetic braided cloth-covered cord is used in keeping with the period of the piece. This restoration is considered a positive, allowing the lamp to be enjoyed and used as originally intended, while the integrity of the original design, materials and finish remain entirely preserved.

Other restored elements may include bespoke replacement components, such as locally made silk lampshades or sympathetically sourced fittings, each chosen to complement the piece without compromising its authenticity.

RESTORED VINTAGE CONDITION

Where sympathetic restoration or conservation has been undertaken, pieces are stabilised or refreshed to extend their longevity while preserving original materials and character wherever possible.

Restoration may include refinishing, reupholstery or structural reinforcement, always carried out with respect for the piece's provenance and vintage appeal.
