The Story
This sculptural Italian cabinet is a striking example of European craft design from the 1970s or 1980s, characterised by its textured facade of vertical wooden slats that give it a monolithic, architectural presence. The slats are arranged at varying depths to create a rhythmic, almost musical surface, drawing the eye across the piece and shifting in appearance as light moves throughout the day.
Rooted in the Brutalist tradition that influenced Italian and broader European cabinetmaking from the 1970s onward, the piece emphasises raw materials, texture, and craftsmanship as the primary design language. The contrast between the dark hardwood facade and the lighter pine case adds further depth, lending the cabinet both sculptural weight and quiet warmth.
Behind the slatted facade, two doors open to reveal a single interior shelf, offering practical storage within the sculptural form. Both functional and visually impactful, the piece works beautifully as a sideboard, bar cabinet, or statement storage piece in living or dining spaces.
Condition Report
The cabinet is structurally sound and fully functional.
The wood has been exceptionally preserved and shows almost no signs of wear. The piece has been sympathetically restored during its lifetime, including updated hinges, allowing it to be lived with and enjoyed in contemporary interiors while preserving the integrity of the original design.
Overall presented in excellent vintage condition with restored elements.
